Accidents are always undesired events, there is no doubt about it; but when dealing with rented cars, the situation is much more complex than if it were your own car. There are three types of accidents that usually occur and we will discuss them next. Forgetting the keys inside the car, little breakdowns and important collisions. Before describing what to do if any of these occur, let’s take a moment to think that the only thing without solution and that you cannot put in danger is your physical integrity and that of the ones accompanying you when driving. Using the seat belt, driving carefully and without speeding and never driving under the influence of the alcohol or drugs should be the necessary measures to take care of the others and us.
Forgetting the keys inside the car: unfortunately no agency will provide you with an extra bunch of keys, and generally they do not even have it. What it is always advisable in case of any inconvenient is to contact the agency and wait for instructions. However, you can solve the problem yourself, though you should know the following: it is true that agencies will charge you great sums for any minimal breakdown or damage cause to the car and this can be avoided by fixing the problem ourselves. Nevertheless we do not have to exaggerate since any damage caused (in this case opening the car to get back the keys) will cost you even more than the solution of the initial problem. When people forget keys inside the car, many people call a locksmith to open the door so as not to damage the car. You can call your credit card company to consult if they can give you a free locksmith service.
Little breakdowns: if you have caused a minimum damage to the vehicle, you can keep driving it without any problem. However, you must inform the company about it so they can authorize you to do it and make sure the damage does not negatively affect the car so as not to be fined by the police.
Important collisions: when you have an important accident first thing to do is to verify that not only you but also those with you are ok. If we are not sure of this, it is advisable to call an ambulance (though it may seem excessive, better safe than sorry) so they can see how you are. As regards legal aspects, you have to find out the name, the driver’s license number, the car model, the number plate, and the insurance number of the one who crashed against you. Also take note of the time and date of the accident. Immediately afterwards you must inform the agency of the accident and find out whether you can replace the car. Then, you have to call the insurance company or the credit card company to find out if they will pay the costs.
To conclude, you should know that if any damage is caused in the car, you should not return it on time since it will take time to do all the paperwork regarding the accident and you may lose your flight. Something to bear in mind: if you notice any damage in the car when picking it up, you should demand to state this on the rent contract in order to avoid future claims.
